Brazil records decline in murders of transgender people in 2024

In 2024, Brazil recorded 122 murders of transgender and travesti people, a 16% decrease from 2023 and the lowest number in nine years. Despite the reduction, Brazil remains the country with the most transgender murders worldwide for the 16th consecutive year, according to the National Association of Travestis and Transsexuals (Antra). The majority of victims were Black or mixed-race trans women, and the report highlights ongoing lack of effective public policies and underreporting issues.
