Court awards record compensation for forced electroshock treatment

2024 China court ruling Protective Enacted Legislation

A Chinese court approved a record 60,000 yuan compensation award to a transgender woman who was subjected to electroshock conversion practices without her consent at a hospital in Qinhuangdao. The woman was held for 97 days and received seven electroshock sessions, which caused ongoing heart problems. This is the first successful legal challenge by a trans person against such practices in China, and activists see it as a victory for trans rights.
