Germany's Self-Determination Act allows legal gender change by self-declaration
Germany's Gender Registration (Self-Determination) Act (SBGG) came fully into force on 1 November 2024, allowing transgender, intersex, and non-binary people with German citizenship or habitual residence in Germany to change their gender entry and forenames in civil status records by self-declaration. The process requires pre-registration at least three months before filing, and the declaration must be submitted to a German register office. Minors aged 14 and over can file themselves with guardian consent, while those under 14 require guardians to file on their behalf. The law simplifies legal gender recognition by removing the need for medical or psychological assessments.
