Hijra community recognized as third gender

2013 Bangladesh legal gender recognition Protective Enacted Legislation

The government of Bangladesh approved the recognition of a 'third' sex, the 'hijra', allowing them to register in passports and other identity documents. This new category aims to reduce gender discrimination in education and health. The number of hijras in Bangladesh is estimated at about 10,000. Similar recognition exists in India and Pakistan.
