Iraq parliament bans biological sex change and criminalizes same-sex relations
In April 2024, Iraq's parliament passed the Anti-Prostitution and Homosexuality Law, amending a 1988 anti-prostitution law. The law criminalizes same-sex sexual conduct with up to 15 years in prison, imposes prison sentences for promoting homosexuality, and criminalizes 'biological sex change' and gender-affirming surgery. It also criminalizes men who 'intentionally' act like women. The law explicitly targets transgender people and has been in force since May 2024.
