Scotland's hate crime law commences, adding transgender identity protections

Scotland's Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act came into force on 1 April 2024, adding age and transgender identity to protected characteristics. Recorded hate crimes rose by 63% in the first six months, with significant increases in disability and age-related crimes. No charges have been made for misgendering, and police say freedom of speech concerns have not materialized.
