Self-identification for gender on birth certificates introduced

2023 New Zealand legal gender recognition Protective Enacted Legislation

New Zealand introduced a self-identification process for changing the sex/gender on birth certificates, effective 15 June 2023, replacing the previous Family Court application requirement. Applicants no longer need to prove medical treatment and can apply directly to the Registrar-General via a statutory declaration. This change is part of the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Act 2021.
