Tunisian authorities arrest dozens in crackdown on LGBTQ+ people
2024 Tunisia other Restrictive Enacted Legislation
Tunisian authorities arrested 84 people, mostly gay men and trans women, between September 2024 and January 2025 in a crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community, using laws criminalizing same-sex relations and public indecency. Detainees face arbitrary detention, unfair prosecution, and forced anal examinations, which Amnesty International calls torture. The arrests followed a homophobic online campaign and are part of broader repression of activists and content creators.
