Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act, signed in May 2023, imposes the death penalty for 'aggravated homosexuality' and life imprisonment for other offenses, requiring citizens to report suspected homosexual activity. Since its enactment, there has been a surge in attacks, evictions, and police harassment against LGBTQ+ people, with over 140 incidents recorded by civil society groups. The law has also deterred healthcare access for LGBTQ+ individuals due to fear among doctors. A legal challenge has been launched, but activists say the social damage is already deeply entrenched.
