Western Australia abolishes Gender Reassignment Board
The Western Australian Parliament passed the Births, Deaths and Marriages Reform Amendment (Sex or Gender Changes) Bill 2024, abolishing the Gender Reassignment Board and removing the requirement for trans people to undergo gender affirming medical treatment and obtain Board approval to update their gender on ID documents. The law also recognizes non-binary people for the first time, though it still requires evidence of appropriate clinical treatment from a doctor or psychologist, and parental consent or court order for those under 18. This makes NSW the last Australian state requiring medical treatment for gender recognition on birth certificates.
